So now we are really into the process and as excited as I am to be involved, it DOES create lots of nerves! Be sure and visit ORC on Wednesdays to see the “main attraction”!
Lots to do and one less week to do it before the end reveal….in case you are just finding this, the One Room Challenge is where we transform a room in 6 weeks and it is quite a community of designers, bloggers and DIY’ers! Started by Linda from “Calling It Home” it has grown to a “must see”. I am joining in the fun for the first time as a linking partner and transforming a very dear friend’s dining room. Last week I showed the “Before” pictures and a little piece of the inspiration….I was so happy that all the comments loved the chandelier as much as I do…I think it is going to be a star for sure!!
This week was all about the demolition – stripping that wallpaper and priming out the dark color, scraping the popcorn ceiling and patching the myriad holes and nicks and dings of a well-used room! My “client” Missy is the star of the week for tackling that popcorn ceiling all by herself!! I am in awe….
You can see a hint of the new dining room furniture…we had to have it delivered before we were finished, so we will have to work around the largest piece, but that way we don’t have to move it again and again as we go…
So now that we have a blank slate, I will share with you the plan for the room and some of the selections we have made so far…
We are inspired by this classic beauty by Alexa Hampton….I love her and her work, and this is such a classic traditional room- Missy is definitely looking for a modern classic and there is no better model than Alexa Hampton!! Light and bright, traditional, but not stuffy. We are also working with a simple wainscot and chair rail and we plan on keeping those basic details, and doing a new wallpaper above the chair rail only. We also added to the existing chair rail to give it a little more weight and detail.
We loved the idea of a subtle, tone on tone wallpaper, but we wanted something with a bit of a “Wow” factor. We decided to do a patterned grasscloth to add a modern touch to a classic, and we narrowed it down to a few great Thibaut options. When John spotted this beauty, “Alexander”, we were all sold!! I loved that it adds a touch of the unexpected with the metallic and the geometric pattern….plus, it is really beautiful. I plan on pulling out the silver from the paper and the sparkle from the chandelier to pull things together and make the space shine…stay tuned for next week where we will look to some artists in the family to highlight a family legacy with the wall decor. I love using family pieces when I work with clients to really bring the family heritage into the mix…
So, are you starting to see where I am heading? The sparkle of crystal, the glimmer of gold, and the shine of silver….I can practically hear the wine being poured…fingers crossed the wallpaper is installed and the walls and trim are painted….can’t wait! I am always so impatient to start to see it happen.
Be sure and check in on all the other ORC linking partners – there are so many interesting projects!
Cheers!
Meredith
